Coventry & The 2 Tone Movement (1979 - 1986)

"Britain was falling apart," Jerry Dammers said of the period that produced Ghost Town, describing a country of factory closures and unrest that runs through nearly everything 2 Tone made. Horace Panter, the Specials' bassist, put Coventry itself more bluntly: "the Detroit of England." This print compiles the complete UK discography released between 1979 and 1986 by the label Dammers founded in that city, documenting the bands, The Specials, Madness, The Beat, The Selecter, The Bodysnatchers and others, who built a genuinely mixed-race scene out of ska revival and punk energy at a moment when Britain badly needed one.

As Don Letts put it, "Jamaican music gave British punk its distinct identity," and 2 Tone is where that influence became most explicit: a label that used a shared visual identity (the black-and-white checkerboard, the Walt Jabsco logo) and a genuinely integrated lineup to make a political statement that didn't need to be stated outright.
