Selected Productions – Producer Poster Series

The Selected Productions series explores the work of influential record producers whose studio innovations shaped the sound of modern music. Each poster presents a carefully curated selection of landmark recordings associated with a single producer, highlighting key albums, collaborations, and defining moments across their careers. Designed as a typographic timeline, the series traces the evolution of music production from the late 1960s through the 1990s.

John Cale
Welsh musician and founding member of the Velvet Underground, John Cale brought an avant-garde sensibility to rock production. With roots in experimental composition and the New York minimalist scene, Cale approached the studio as a space for sonic exploration. As a producer he helped shape pivotal recordings by artists such as Nico, The Stooges, Patti Smith, and The Modern Lovers. His productions capture the transition from art rock and proto-punk into the emerging punk and new wave movements.

Brian Eno
Brian Eno redefined the role of the producer as a creative collaborator and sonic architect. Emerging from the art-rock world of Roxy Music, he became one of the most influential studio innovators of the late twentieth century. Through productions with Talking Heads, Devo, and U2, Eno introduced experimental recording techniques, ambient textures, and unconventional compositional methods. His work demonstrates how the producer can shape not only the sound but also the conceptual direction of a record.

Martin Hannett
Martin Hannett developed the distinctive production style that came to define the post-punk era. Working primarily with Manchester’s Factory Records, he crafted spacious, atmospheric recordings using unconventional microphone placement, electronic processing, and meticulous studio experimentation. His work with Joy Division, Magazine, A Certain Ratio, and The Durutti Column transformed punk’s raw immediacy into a colder, more cinematic sound that became synonymous with early 1980s British alternative music.
