Leeds has spent decades producing genuinely influential music while somehow staying out of the spotlight Manchester and Sheffield attract, and this print makes the case for reconsidering that. It centres on Leeds Polytechnic's art school scene, which in the late 1970s produced Gang of Four, whose angular, politically charged post-punk directly influenced generations of bands that followed, and The Mekons, whose stripped-down, anti-establishment approach ran on a parallel, equally uncompromising track.

Soft Cell's Marc Almond and Dave Ball met at Leeds Polytechnic before taking synth-pop to Number One with "Tainted Love," while Leeds' goth credentials run deep through Andrew Eldritch's Sisters of Mercy, one of the genre's genuinely foundational bands. The Wedding Present carried Leeds' guitar-driven, DIY instincts through the 80s and 90s, and the map continues into more recent names: Pulled Apart By Horses, iLiKETRAiNS, Nightmares On Wax's Warp-adjacent electronic output, and Kaiser Chiefs' 2000s chart run, tracing a city whose scene has been consistently ahead of its reputation.

I’m Alejandro De Luna, the creator behind The Sense of Doubt; a solo studio in Madrid making wall art inspired by music, pop culture, and heritage. What began as a way to make sense of the records, places, and stories that shaped my life has grown into a visual archive that connects moods, history, and art.
