This print traces three decades of downtown New York reinventing itself, from Andy Warhol's Factory scene and The Velvet Underground's confrontational art rock in the late 60s, through the mid-70s CBGB scene that gave rise to the Ramones' stripped-down blueprint for punk, Television's more musically ambitious take on the same club, Patti Smith's fusion of poetry and rock and roll, and Talking Heads and Blondie's respective routes from CBGB into art rock and new wave stardom.

The map continues into no wave's deliberately abrasive response to punk's own commercialisation, tracing acts like Sonic Youth and Lydia Lunch, before crossing into a genuinely different world entirely: the birth of hip hop in the Bronx, where DJ Kool Herc's block parties and Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash's turntable innovations built an entirely new musical language from scratch. New York hardcore and thrash metal round out the later decades, tracing a city whose scenes rarely overlapped geographically but shared the same restless, do-it-yourself instinct.
