A large-format print mapping the evolution of Manchester’s music scene—from the 1950s to the present.

Organised by era, genre, and cultural context, tracing how one of the UK’s most influential cities shaped modern music.

  • 400+ artists across decades
  • Organised by era and genre progression
  • Includes key venues, labels, and movements
  • A1 large-format print

Overview

A structured visual overview of Manchester’s musical output, mapping connections between artists, genres, and cultural movements across more than half a century.

Rather than a simple list of bands, the design presents Manchester’s music history as an interconnected system, showing how scenes emerge, evolve, and influence one another over time.

From early rock and beat groups to post punk, Madchester, indie, and contemporary sounds, the print captures the continuity of a city constantly redefining itself.

What’s included

  • Key artists from different eras, including Joy Division, The Smiths, New Order, Buzzcocks, The Fall, The Stone Roses, Oasis, and Happy Mondays
  • Genre clusters spanning post punk, indie, alternative, electronic, and more
  • Organised by era and genre progression from the 1950s to today
  • Connections between scenes, movements, and cultural shifts
  • Influential venues, labels, and moments central to Manchester’s identity

Why Manchester

Few cities have had such a sustained and global impact on music culture. From the post punk explosion to the Madchester era and beyond, Manchester has repeatedly reshaped the sound and direction of modern music.

This print captures that continuity, mapping how each generation builds on the last.

Who’s Behind The Sense of Doubt ?

I’m Alejandro De Luna, the creator behind The Sense of Doubt; a solo studio in Madrid making wall art inspired by music, pop culture, and heritage. What began as a way to make sense of the records, places, and stories that shaped my life has grown into a visual archive that connects moods, history, and art.

I research, design, and hand-sign every piece myself in small batches, and today more than 10,000 art lovers in over 20 countries have my prints on their walls. People describe the work as “brilliantly researched,” “put together with great care,” and “a true labour of love.” That’s exactly what it is; no shortcuts, just me doing the work because I love it.
