Bristol's music history resists a single genre tag more than most British cities, which is exactly why it's interesting to map. This print compiles over 350 local artists and groups across 20-plus genres and seven decades, from punk pioneers The Cortinas and Vice Squad, through post-punk innovators The Pop Group, to the sound systems (Enterprise, The Wild Bunch) that fed directly into the trip hop era of Massive Attack, Tricky and Portishead, and on to drum and bass (Roni Size) and art punk (Idles).

The throughline across all of it is Bristol's sound system culture, a scene built on shared equipment, shared crews, and cross-genre collaboration rather than competition between rival camps, which is arguably the reason the city has produced such a disproportionately wide range of influential music from a relatively small population.
