A large-format print mapping the evolution of Sheffield’s music scene across genres, movements, and decades.

Organised by era and genre progression, tracing connections between artists, scenes, and cultural spaces.

Overview

A structured visual overview of Sheffield’s musical output, mapping connections between artists, genres, and scenes, from early industrial and post punk foundations to contemporary alternative and electronic music.

Rather than a simple list of bands, the design presents Sheffield’s music history as an interconnected system showing how movements evolve, overlap, and influence one another over time.

What’s included

  • Key artists from Cabaret Voltaire and The Human League to Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, and Bring Me The Horizon
  • Genre clusters including post punk, industrial, synth pop, electronic, indie, and metal
  • Organised by era and genre progression across decades
  • Relationships between scenes and movements
  • Influential venues and cultural spaces central to Sheffield’s identity
  • References to labels such as Warp Records

Why Sheffield

Few cities have produced such a concentrated and diverse musical output. From the experimental roots of industrial and electronic music to globally influential indie and alternative acts, Sheffield’s contribution extends far beyond its size.

This print captures that continuity mapping how one scene evolves into another, and how a local sound becomes a global influence.

Who’s Behind The Sense of Doubt ?

I’m Alejandro De Luna, the creator behind The Sense of Doubt; a solo studio in Madrid making wall art inspired by music, pop culture, and heritage. What began as a way to make sense of the records, places, and stories that shaped my life has grown into a visual archive that connects moods, history, and art.

I research, design, and hand-sign every piece myself in small batches, and today more than 10,000 art lovers in over 20 countries have my prints on their walls. People describe the work as “brilliantly researched,” “put together with great care,” and “a true labour of love.” That’s exactly what it is; no shortcuts, just me doing the work because I love it.
