Hendrix, 55 Years Gone: The Last Gig, The Last Days
Jimi Hendrix passed away on the 18th of September 1970 in London, joining the infamous “27 Club.” This year marks 55 years since his passing.
Just twelve days earlier, on the 6th of September 1970, Hendrix played his final full concert at the Open Air Love & Peace Festival on the German island of Fehmarn in the Baltic Sea, near Denmark. Often described as Germany’s answer to Woodstock, the festival drew around 25,000 fans, and the rain, violence, and clashes with local biker gangs only helped seal the performance’s place in music history.
Back in London after the festival, on the 16th of September, Hendrix had his final late-night jam at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Soho, joining Eric Burdon. Two days later, he was found unresponsive at the Samarkand Hotel in Notting Hill and was later pronounced dead at St. Mary Abbot’s Hospital.
These photos of the Hendrix Memorial Stone on Fehmarn were taken in September 2020, at the site of the festival, with the Baltic Sea as a backdrop.
Hendrix lives on.
